Chapter Eight: More Strange Deaths
Another case of death was the mother headline of the major newspapers that morning. This time, the manner of death is stranger than the other case involving the death from an alleged suicide (which is not really suicide, according to his professional judgment) that already bewildered his senses, with this particular case being more bizarre as it was reportedly committed within West College, the official residence of the General of the Ranks.
And adding to the mystery is the fact that the victim of this ruthless murder was the General of the Ranks himself. Although the Crime Scene Investigators arrived there on time, the circumstances on how the murder was carried out was a complete mystery, which necessitated an expert from the Corps of Personnel to take over in the initial gathering of evidence. So now, as an expert himself, he was reluctantly involved in this controversial case.
As if he wasn't already pre-occupied with the heavy demands of the cases of a murder of very odd circumstances.
First of all, there was no potential murder weapon located within the scene, although it was quite obvious that the victim's corpse suffered multiple abrasions and contusions all over the upper extremities, and several deep wounds in the torso and the back of his neck. While the wounds may have been inflicted by the attacker, there was no visible sign that the General was able to fight back, and this is simply odd.
It was as if the General walked right into his own death willingly.
Second of all, the Coroner's report on the manner of death was also strange (it does not support the circumstantial evidence gathered in the scene), because the report returned with a "natural causes" as the reason of death. Although cerebral hypoxia was alleged later on in the supplemental report coming from a pathology audit, the same does not support the main pretext of the evidence gathered from the murder scene.
He was starting to believe that, in these two cases, something mystical happened between these two bizarre deaths that he must uncover, and he was quite convinced that there was an on-going sabotage in the Code of Taxonomy which has been deliberately infiltrated to cause errors in the investigative capabilities of the Tower of Taxononomy. He may be wrong about his own suspicions at this point, but he is certain enough that something supernatural was happening in these two cases that is beyond the reach of science.
For him, there was no other option left but to invoke the Joint Operation with the Anti-Plagiarists to get to the bottom of this, and he will file the formal request with the Scientific Council as soon as possible.
The Joint Operation is not customarily invoked in the past, but current situations have changed. The biggest challenge in the Code of Taxonomy right now is already happening and unfolding, with no realistic resolution in sight. Time is not on their side, unfortunately. This must be stopped before another murder is discovered.
