Chapter Fifty Six: Open Secret
"You do realize the repercussions of these killings, don't you? It is not very uncommon for a crime not to be defined and detected, and for this ruthless criminal to be out there, at large, armed and dangerous, away from the known avenues of justice. Something is not right, isn't it?"
"Yes, I do share the same view."
"And why do you think this is the case?"
"I know for a fact that the presence of fear is what it takes to elicit obedience from the population. It is a purposeful way of efficaciously keeping the reins of the establishment intact and unperturbed, ready to provide the comforting assurance of security that only this perfect order could only provide. It is a sure way of conditioning the mind of the unsuspecting masses."
"I wasn't wrong about you. In fact, I never assumed that you were still blinded by the false idealism of youth. You seem very familiar with the actual ways of the world."
"It's called tactics, I believe. In a world full of pretension, being right is an incurable sickness that can immediately result to a painful, treacherous death. Surely, I know in myself that I can never involve my conscious participation in something like that."
"Are you not bothered anymore to these hidden injustices, just like the rest of us working for the Scientific Council? Have you also gave up on your faith and subscribe to a higher entity despite the presence of convincing evidence to the goodness in all things encountered?"
"Good and evil are two opposing forces that do not matter substantially. The only difference is that one is legal and encouraged, while the other is consistently discouraged by the majority of those who hold power in our political institutions. Goodness is a mere invention of the rich as a well-defined methodology of robbing everybody of their wealth. This disgusting scheme is very sickening, to begin with."
"That's what I also know, and what I believe in. It is incumbent upon the individual to either survive or perish, but never consent to becoming a slave of mercantile interests. This perfect order is good for all, and no one shall ever dare question it solely on account of ruthless slavery. But there are so-called "pests" that can ultimately reside within this self-perfecting system who profits more than the others, allowing the element of greed to play its self-preserving stance. But do you know what eventually happens to these greedy agents of the system?"
"They will die. They deserve to perish in an excruciating manner."
"That is correct, my son. We only need to wait until these avaricious minds that are controlling the secrets of the Tower of Taxonomy to commit the mistake that many others before them have audaciously committed."
"And then what, father? What is at stake."
"We will move to sequester the Sovereign See, the virtues of the House of Dunster, including the entirety of wealth of its cathedra. And then all those who are capable of mounting a credible resistance to our goals will be neutralized by our own appointed might."
"It will take some time, then."
"Patience will be the key in this entire operation. An open secret is not a definite motive for unsuspecting murders. But one must be prudent enough in dealing with this dangerous territory, for all the stones looted that were responsible in holding on to the power of this crown must surrender their own claim to that specified stone."
"What if the killer will be unexpectedly caught? Eventually, this possibility might happen; this is the danger of certainty. What then?"
"In ordinary ways, and within the employment of present statistical methods, the arrest of the murderer is an open likelihood. But you are also forgetting in saying so, my son, that we are dealing with the perfect order. Failure is definitely not an option in this pre-conditioned environment."
"Then it is going to be a barbaric battle, in the full extent of the definition of the word."
